Pre-Service Training Courses


9 Hour Communication Course:

Training Description: This 9 hour training provides an introduction to the concepts of developing strong communication skills when working in a child care center. Topics include speaking, writing, interpersonal communication strategies, and critical techniques, with a focus on communication with parents and coworkers, and general communication issues within a typical child care setting.

Required Of/Student Benefit: A myth circulating, claiming that any previously completed college course exempts a child care worker from needing the 9 Hour Communication Course is incorrect. The following information, taken directly from COMAR 13A.16.06, outlines exactly which child care workers are required to complete this training. Review the information carefully and contact us with any questions. 9 hours Pre-Service.


* Child Care Assistant/Assistant Child Care Teacher (formerly known as Assistant Group Leader): Prior to assuming the role of Child Care Assistant/Assistant Child Care Teacher, any employee who is new to this position, whether a new hire or a promotion, must complete the pre-service 9 Hour Communication Course trained my a MSDE approved trainer.

Exception: An individual who qualified before July 1, 2008, as an assistant child care teacher in a school age center and has been continuously employed since that time as an assistant child care teacher at the same or another school age center.


* Child Care Teacher in Preschool Centers (formerly known as Senior Staff/Group Leader positions): Prior to assuming the role of Child Care Teacher in a Preschool Center, any employee who is new to this position, whether a new hire or a promotion, must complete the pre-service 9 Hour Communication Course trained my a MSDE approved trainer.

Exception #1: The individual holds an associate's or higher degree with approved courses in early childhood education; or

Exception #2: The individual qualified before July 1, 2008, as a Child Care Teacher in a Preschool Center and has been continuously employed since that time at the same or another preschool center; or

Exception #3: The individual:

(a) Has been approved as a teacher by the Department for early childhood in nursery school through third grade; or

(b) Is certified by the Department or by any other state for early childhood in nursery school through third grade.


* Child Care Teacher in School Age Centers (formerly known as Senior Staff/Group Leader positions): Prior to assuming the role of Child Care Teacher in a School Age Center, any employee who is new to this position, whether a new hire or a promotion, must complete the pre-service 9 Hour Communication Course trained my a MSDE approved trainer.

Exception #1: The individual qualified before July 1, 2008, as a Child Care Teacher in a School Age Center and has been continuously employed since that time as a Child Care Teacher at the same or another school age center; or

Exception #2: The individual:

(a) Has been approved as a teacher by the Maryland State Department of Education under COMAR 13A.09.09 for kindergarten or grades 1 through 8; or

(b) Is certified by the Department or by the state board of any other state for kindergarten or grades 1 through 8.


* Child Care Center Director in Preschool Centers: Prior to assuming the role of Child Care Center Director in a Preschool Center, any employee who is new to this position, whether a new hire or a promotion, must complete the pre-service 9 Hour Communication Course trained my a MSDE approved trainer.

Exception #1: An individual is considered qualified as a director of any size preschool center when that individual:

(1) Has completed 1 year of experience:

(a) Working primarily with preschoolers in a licensed child care center, nursery school, church-operated school, or similar setting; or

(b) Caring for preschoolers as a registered family child care provider;

and

(2) Has received either:

(a) Approval by the Department as a teacher for early childhood education, including nursery school through third grade, and has 6 semester hours in early childhood education; or

(b) Certification by the Department or by any other state for early childhood education, including nursery school through third grade; or

Exception #2: If, as of July 1, 2008, an individual was currently employed at a preschool center for 20 or fewer, 21 to 40, or more than 40 children, and qualified as the director of that center, the individual continues to be qualified as the director if continuously employed at the same or another center with the same or greater capacity limitations.


* Child Care Center Director in School Age Centers: Prior to assuming the role of Child Care Center Director in a School Age Center, any employee who is new to this position, whether a new hire or a promotion, must complete the pre-service 9 Hour Communication Course trained my a MSDE approved trainer.

Exception #1: An individual is considered qualified as a director of a school age center if the individual is certified for kindergarten, nursery school through third grade, or grades 1 through 8 by the Department or by the state board of any other state; or

Exception #2: If, as of July 1, 2008, an individual was currently employed at a center serving only school age children, and qualified as the director of that center, the individual continues to be qualified as the director if continuously employed at the same or at another school age center.

Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Planning:

Training Description: This 6 hour traning is designed to meet the Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Planning Training requirement for family child care providers and child care centers as stated in the Maryland Senate Bill 356 and COMAR regulations set forth by the Maryland State Department of Education - Office of Child Care (MSDE-OCC).

This training will help family child care providers and child care center providers to prepare for different types of disasters that may occur in their geographic area. Explore the benefits of having a well developed written emergency plan as well as create a written plan that will follow current legislative and state requirements.

Ready, Set, Learn! (an MMSR/Domain Workshop):

Workshop Description: Parents! Come and learn about the State of Maryland's Model for School Readiness curriculum (MMSR) which covers the 7 Domains of Learning that promote school readiness.
